Essays in Honor of Douglas J. Moo

May 12, 2015 by Andy Naselli

On November 19, 2014 in San Diego during the Evangelical Theological Society’s annual meeting, Biblica, the Committee on Bible Translation, and Zondervan presented “The NIV 50th Anniversary Dinner and Program: Celebrating the Commissioning of the NIV.”

At the event Doug Moo, chair of the Committee on Bible Translation, spoke about the NIV. Here’s what he said (available as a free PDF): [Read more…] about Essays in Honor of Douglas J. Moo

Doug Moo Videos on Romans in Logos Bible Software

March 4, 2014 by Andy Naselli

Doug Moo is my favorite exegete on Romans, a letter he has studied carefully for over forty years. (See my chronological list of his publications on Romans.)

So I’m delighted that Logos Bible Software recently released a new course: Doug Moo on Paul’s Letter to the Romans.

  • It includes about 10 hours of video clips of Doug Moo explaining Romans.
  • Doug recorded these lectures in a studio at the Logos headquarters during a week in August 2013.
  • This course releases after Logos’s first bundle of courses

for “Logos Mobile Education.” Logos sees the educational space as one ripe for technological innovation, and they plan to add many more courses. Unlike tradition education, you get to “take the professor with you.” And the cost is lower than what most schools charge to audit a course.

Watch Doug Moo Lecture on Romans in 53 Segments

December 21, 2012 by Andy Naselli

Doug Moo is my favorite commentator on Paul’s letter to the Romans. (I list 17 of his publications on Romans here.)

So I was delighted to learn this morning that BiblicalTraining.org just announced a new class: Doug Moo on Romans. The course was recorded during a D.Min. seminar in May 2012.

You can watch Moo lecture on Romans in 53 segments for free, but unfortunately you can only stream it online. But you can download the audio. (They’re currently working on an app for the resources on the site.)

Update on 4/3/2013: I downloaded all 53 MP3s and imported them into an iTunes playlist (15.8 hours), and yesterday and today I listened to all 53 MP3s (on double-speed) while doing other tasks. Time well spent.

  • Doug doesn’t teach through Romans verse by verse but instead focuses on important and debated passages.
  • This also includes some Q&A with students, which is usually not terribly insightful but is still worth listening to in order to hear Doug interact with the students.
  • Doug models theological humility.

So What Do Profs Like Doug Moo and Grant Osborne Talk about When They Carpool?

December 20, 2012 by Andy Naselli

The opening of Doug Moo’s chapter in Grant Osborne’s Festschrift made me smile:

I consider it a great privilege to be able to contribute an essay to this volume honoring a good friend and, for many years, colleague, Grant Osborne. We served together at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School for over twenty years, years that cemented our relationship not only professionally but personally. We lived in the same neighborhood as the Osbornes for many years, and our families grew up together. Seared in my memory especially are times spent with Grant and other Trinity colleagues in an automobile, as we car-pooled together back and forth to Trinity. Students sometimes wondered at the deep theological discussions we profs must have been having during those rides; but I am afraid that our topics of conversation more often focused on the Chicago Bears or Bulls than on millennialism or supra-lapsarianism!

-Douglas J. Moo, “Translation in New Testament Commentaries,” On the Writing of New Testament Commentaries: Festschrift for Grant R. Osborne on the Occasion of His 70th Birthday (ed. Stanley E. Porter and Eckhard J. Schnabel; Texts and Editions for New Testament Study 8; Leiden: Brill, 2013), 57.

My Two Favorite Commentaries on 2 Peter and Jude

July 30, 2012 by Andy Naselli

I recently worked on a project on 2 Peter and Jude (more on that later), and I read a stack of commentaries from cover to cover (actually, I read a lineup of commentaries in Logos Bible Software from top to bottom). These two served me best:

1. Doug Moo

mooDouglas J. Moo. 2 Peter, Jude.  NIV Application Commentary. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1996. 316 pp.

Just outstanding. The NIVAC volumes have three categories in each section: original meaning, building contexts, and contemporary significance. Moo’s exegetical work in the first category is judicious as we’d expect, but what pleasantly surprised me is how edifying the other two categories are. The “contemporary significance” categories at the end of each section are so wise. [Read more…] about My Two Favorite Commentaries on 2 Peter and Jude

Legalism

January 27, 2012 by Andy Naselli

C. J. Mahaney, “Breaking the Rule of Legalism: How the Cross Rescues You from the Performance Trap,” chapter 11 in Living the Cross-Centered Life: Keeping the Gospel the Main Thing  (Sisters, OR: Multnomah, 2006), 111–21.

A legalist is anyone who behaves as if they can earn God’s forgiveness through personal performance. (p. 112)

[Legalism is] a danger that we’ll never outgrow in this lifetime. The tendency for legalism exists for each of us each and every day—because of the pride and self-righteousness of our indwelling sin. (p. 114)

Douglas J. Moo, “Legalism,” in New Living Translation Study Bible (ed. Sean A. Harrison; Carol Stream, IL: Tyndale House, 2008), note on Col 2:16–23 (formatting added):

Legalism ([Col] 2:16–23)

Matt 23:13–33
Mark 7:1–15
Gal 2:14–21

At the time of Christ and the early church, Jews made much of rules and laws in their understanding of religion. [Read more…] about Legalism
