3 Ways to Nourish and Cherish Your Wife: Practical Advice C. J. Mahaney Would Give You If He Met with You at Starbucks

October 10, 2012 by Andy Naselli

This wise practical advice from C. J. Mahaney served me well:

It’s the final message from a one-day conference that occurred on August 23, 2012 at Southern Seminary: “Strengthening Your Marriage in Ministry.”

CJ’s message is so helpful that I’ve listened to it three times and watched it once with my wife.

Here are some notes I took: [Read more…] about 3 Ways to Nourish and Cherish Your Wife: Practical Advice C. J. Mahaney Would Give You If He Met with You at Starbucks

Humble Athletes

August 22, 2012 by Andy Naselli

Two excerpts from C. J. Mahaney on humble athletes:

C. J. Mahaney, “Appendix,” in Game Day for the Glory of God: A Guide for Athletes, Fans, and Wannabes   (by Stephen Altrogge; Wheaton: Crossway, 2008), 108:

When Chad and I watch a game together, I am on the lookout for ways to teach him. I want to equip him to discern true greatness in the eyes of God. [Read more…] about Humble Athletes

Legalism

January 27, 2012 by Andy Naselli

C. J. Mahaney, “Breaking the Rule of Legalism: How the Cross Rescues You from the Performance Trap,” chapter 11 in Living the Cross-Centered Life: Keeping the Gospel the Main Thing  (Sisters, OR: Multnomah, 2006), 111–21.

A legalist is anyone who behaves as if they can earn God’s forgiveness through personal performance. (p. 112)

[Legalism is] a danger that we’ll never outgrow in this lifetime. The tendency for legalism exists for each of us each and every day—because of the pride and self-righteousness of our indwelling sin. (p. 114)

Douglas J. Moo, “Legalism,” in New Living Translation Study Bible (ed. Sean A. Harrison; Carol Stream, IL: Tyndale House, 2008), note on Col 2:16–23 (formatting added):

Legalism ([Col] 2:16–23)

Matt 23:13–33
Mark 7:1–15
Gal 2:14–21

At the time of Christ and the early church, Jews made much of rules and laws in their understanding of religion. [Read more…] about Legalism

C. J. and Carolyn Mahaney on Parenting

February 29, 2008 by Andy Naselli

This week my wife and I listened to a two-part interview that Grant Layman conducted with C. J. and Carolyn Mahaney and their daughters Nicole and Janelle in 2002 (at least that’s the copyright date). My wife had already listened to it and wanted me to hear it. What an edifying, humbling, enjoyable interview. Highly recommended!

  1. Part 1: “Grant Layman opens this message on parenting by inviting his audience into the Mahaney’s living room. This session of testimonies from C.J. and Carolyn Mahaney and two of their daughters offer insight into biblical parenting. Grant interviews the Mahaney family on topics including guarding family times together, training godly sons and daughters, faithful confrontation of sin, proper discipline, and building a collection of family memories.”
  2. Part 2: “Grant Layman continues an insightful and fun-filled interview with C.J. and Carolyn Mahaney. Daughters Nicole and Janelle share what each appreciated most about her upbringing and make a fascinating statement concerning what they wish their parents had done differently. Topics include the challenges faced by parents of teens, and insight on graciously dealing with those challenges according to Scripture. “

C. J. Mahaney and Matt Schmucker Interview Mark Dever

September 4, 2007 by Andy Naselli

I just thoroughly enjoyed listening to this MP3 in which C. J. Mahaney and Matt Schmucker interview Mark Dever:

“Life and Ministry with Mark Dever: The tables turn as C. J. Mahaney puts Mark Dever in the hot seat and interviews him.”

The interview took place on June 6, 2007. As usual with conversations involving Mahaney and Dever, this is hilarious (e.g., C. J.’s ribbing Dever about his intellectual childhood, lack of athletic abilities, and wearing a tie and carrying a briefcase to high school), fascinating (e.g., I didn’t know that D. A. Carson delivered a letter from Carl Henry to Dever in England that asked Dever to consider pastoring Capitol Hill Baptist Church), and edifying (e.g., Dever’s faithfulness to and love for God’s word and people).

Cf. two previous posts, T4G Video and T4G 2006 MP3s, as well as the following two entries on the MP3s page of my recommended resources:

  • Mark Dever (bio): The 9 Marks interviews and Henry Forums are especially enjoyable and edifying.
  • C. J. Mahaney (bio): hilarious, humble, practical, convicting

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the latest “Together for the Gospel” video this morning. I found it both edifying and enjoyable to watch Mark Dever, Al Mohler, Lig Duncan, and C. J. Mahaney interact with each other for over fifty minutes!
