Steve Jobs

November 21, 2011 by Andy Naselli

Last week I read Steve Jobs, the recent biography by Walter Isaacson.

(The audiobook is about 24 hours long, and I listened to it in 12 hours on double speed. The narrator reads very slowly.)

Fascinating.

If I had to summarize Steve Jobs with just two words, I’d choose these:

  1. genius
  2. jerk

Reflections on the book and the man:

  1. Tim Challies
  2. Mark Ward
  3. Stephen Altrogge
  4. Malcolm Gladwell

Mediums

September 26, 2011 by Andy Naselli

Chapter 8 of this book is entitled “Mediums”:

John Dyer. From the Garden to the City: The Redeeming and Corrupting Power of Technology. Grand Rapids: Kregel, 2011. [endorsements]

“The message is the content we transmit from our minds to our audience, while everything that surrounds those words can be considered a medium.” Mediums may include “an email, a handwritten note, a phone call, a Facebook wall post, or any other tool we use to communicate” (p. 117).

Dyer makes three arguments about mediums (pp. 117–31):

  1. “Mediums communicate meaning.” This is evident “in the way we use various communication mediums: formality, difficulty, and speed.”
  2. “Mediums create culture (and cultural divides).”
  3. “Mediums shape thinking.” Two examples: printing press and photography.

Related: Among other things, John Dyer maintains the extraordinarily useful “Best Commentaries” site.

Evernote or OneNote?

August 8, 2011 by Andy Naselli

I’m ready to go (almost) completely paperless in a more efficient way, and it seems like these are the top two programs for that:

1. Evernote

  • I’ve used the free version a bit over the last few years, but I haven’t used it extensively.
  • The premium version costs $45 per year.
  • Michael Hyatt highly recommends it.

2. OneNote

  • I own OneNote 2010, but I’ve never used it.
  • It seems like an efficient tool.
  • It doesn’t appear to have an iPad app. (Update on 12/12/2011: It now has an iPad app.)

I’m leaning towards going with OneNote since I already own it. (I wish Google Notebook didn’t stop development.)

Suggestions?

iPad Resources

June 1, 2011 by Andy Naselli

I shared some iPhone resources in January 2010, and now I’m ready to share some iPad resources.

I bought an iPad 2 when it came out in March (32 GB, black, Wi-Fi only), and I’m glad I did. Here are some resources that may help you use the tool more efficiently.

1. iPad Apps

The iPad comes with several built-in apps, and over 65,000 apps are available through the iTunes Store.

Here’s a screen-shot of my apps (in addition to the built-in apps) as they appear in iTunes (click on the image to enlarge):

1.1. My Favorite Reading Apps

There are many other useful apps that I’ve chosen not to use for various reasons (e.g., PIM, news, sports). I use my iPad primarily for reading, and these reading apps are my favorites: [Read more…] about iPad Resources

  2. Check your inbox for an email from Feedburner, and click on the link.

Sorry for the inconvenience, and sorry for the FeedBlitz ads.
