True Beauty

March 27, 2014 by Andy Naselli

trueSix years ago my wife recommended three books by Carolyn Mahaney and her daughters.

At the end of this month another one releases:

Carolyn Mahaney and Nicole Whitacre. True Beauty. Wheaton: Crossway, 2014. 125 pp. 22-page PDF sample.

This book is for ladies, but I read it because I love and lead my wife and three little daughters. This is going to become an increasingly big deal as my daughters get older, and I want to shepherd them well. [Read more…] about True Beauty

Doug Moo’s Commentary on Galatians

March 20, 2014 by Andy Naselli

MooThis 469-page commentary released at the end of 2013:

Douglas J. Moo. Galatians. Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament. Grand Rapids: Baker, 2013.

Doug Moo is one of the finest NT exegetes I know of. Everything he publishes is worth reading carefully, and this latest tome is no exception. [Read more…] about Doug Moo’s Commentary on Galatians

Five Views on Biblical Inerrancy

March 18, 2014 by Andy Naselli

inerrancyThis debate-book released at the end of November 2013:

J. Merrick and Stephen M. Garrett, eds. Five Views on Biblical Inerrancy. Counterpoints. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2013. 39-page sample PDF.

I love these debate-books because they (usually) layout distinct positions winsomely. And my favorite parts are when the contributors interact with each other after their initial essays. [Read more…] about Five Views on Biblical Inerrancy

Church Essentials (DVD) with Mark Dever

March 13, 2014 by Andy Naselli

essentialsI love Mark Dever’s resources on the church, so I’m not sure why I don’t recall hearing about Church Essentials, which Lifeway published in 2012.

The Leader Kit includes two DVDs, which feature six thoughtful interviews with Mark Dever. Mark is incredibly gifted at speaking off-the-cuff clearly, directly, wisely, and winsomely.

DVD contents:

Calvinism: Deeply Experiencing God’s Grace

March 11, 2014 by Andy Naselli

5pointsIn some circles Calvinism unfortunately has a reputation for being sinfully contentious, especially when self-labeled Calvinists are arrogant and when non-Calvinists misunderstand what Calvinism really is.

This 94-page book should help:

John Piper. Five Points: Towards a Deeper Experience of God’s Grace. Fearn, Scotland: Christian Focus, 2013.

It’s available as a free PDF.

Walking with God through Pain and Suffering

March 6, 2014 by Andy Naselli

Pain_SufferingI read this one slowly because it’s so rich:

Timothy Keller. Walking with God through Pain and Suffering. New York: Dutton, 2013. 12-page PDF sample.

It’s probably the best overall book on suffering because it shrewdly addresses the issue from three angles:

  1. cultural
  2. biblical-theological
  3. practical

As with Keller’s other books, this brims with wisdom from decades of fruitful pastoral ministry. [Read more…] about Walking with God through Pain and Suffering

Doug Moo Videos on Romans in Logos Bible Software

March 4, 2014 by Andy Naselli

Doug Moo is my favorite exegete on Romans, a letter he has studied carefully for over forty years. (See my chronological list of his publications on Romans.)

So I’m delighted that Logos Bible Software recently released a new course: Doug Moo on Paul’s Letter to the Romans.

  • It includes about 10 hours of video clips of Doug Moo explaining Romans.
  • Doug recorded these lectures in a studio at the Logos headquarters during a week in August 2013.
  • This course releases after Logos’s first bundle of courses

for “Logos Mobile Education.” Logos sees the educational space as one ripe for technological innovation, and they plan to add many more courses. Unlike tradition education, you get to “take the professor with you.” And the cost is lower than what most schools charge to audit a course.
