Two Convicting Quotes from Piper on Owen

March 23, 2007 by Andy Naselli

I read this article this morning:

  • John Piper, “Communing with God in the Things for Which We Contend: How John Owen Killed His Own Sin While Contending for the Truth.” Pages 77-113 in Contending for Our All: Defending Truth and Treasuring Christ in the Lives of Athanasius, John Owen, and J. Gresham Machen. Vol. 4 of The Swans Are Not Silent. Wheaton: Crossway, 2006.
  • This is based on Piper’s presentation at the 1994 Bethlehem Conference for Pastors. An edited manuscript and a link to the MP3 are available here.

I found these two quotations particularly convicting and challenging:

  • “Packer says that the Puritans differ from evangelicals today because with them, ‘. . . communion with God was a great thing, to evangelicals today it is a comparatively small thing. The Puritans were concerned about communion with God in a way that we are not. The measure of our unconcern is the little that we say about it. When Christians meet, they talk to each other about their Christian work and Christian interests, their Christian acquaintances, the state of the churches, and the problems of theology—but rarely of their daily experience of God.'”
  • “One great hindrance to holiness in the ministry of the word is that we are prone to preach and write without pressing into the things we say and making them real to our own souls. Over the years words begin to come easy, and we find we can speak of mysteries without standing in awe; we can speak of purity without feeling pure; we can speak of zeal without spiritual passion; we can speak of God’s holiness without trembling; we can speak of sin without sorrow; we can speak of heaven without eagerness. And the result is a terrible hardening of the spiritual life.”

The Gospel Coalition

March 9, 2007 by Andy Naselli

This week Dr. Carson gave permission to Justin Taylor to post on his blog an announcement that has not been public knowledge up to this point. More details are forthcoming, but at least this much can be released now: Dr. Carson and his good friend Pastor Tim Keller are teaming up with some forty-five other pastors to rally around the gospel, hence their name: The Gospel Coalition. The first conference is a little over two months away: May 23-24, 2007. Their website, www.TheGospelCoalition.org, is in the process of being built; it currently contains information only for this upcoming conference. Registration is limited; the cutoff is at about 550 people. See Justin Taylor’s post for more details.

Bruce Metzger (1914-2007)

February 14, 2007 by Andy Naselli

Bruce Metzger (cf. here and here) passed away on 13 February 2007. Although evangelicals do not agree with Metzger on some key areas, I am profoundly grateful for his work in textual criticism. Few are as gifted as he was.

MacArthur on the Emerging Church

February 7, 2007 by Andy Naselli

Today we received this CD in the mail: “What’s So Dangerous About the Emerging Church?” Phil Johnson interviews John MacArthur for a solid hour in layman language. (You can purchase it here as a CD for $6 or an MP3 for $3.) Jenni and I listened to it this evening and thoroughly enjoyed it. If you listen to it, keep in mind that his target audience is laymen—not scholars on epistemology. Overall, we found the interview to be refreshingly bold, even shockingly so. It’s definitely the same MacArthur you watch on Larry King. He is unashamedly outspoken for the truth.

The Apologetics of Francis Schaeffer

January 31, 2007 by Andy Naselli

Over the Christmas break, I had a one-week window to do some pleasure reading while in Greenville. One of the books I read was this one:

Bryan A. Follis, Truth with Love: The Apologetics of Francis Schaeffer. Wheaton: Crossway, 2006.

It was an enjoyable, edifying read, and it prompted me to spend about six hours watching Schaeffer’s How Should We Then Live? one morning/afternoon that week.

For more info, see the following:

  • Crossway’s entry: You can search inside the book, view parts of it as a PDF, and read a description of its contents followed by endorsements by people such as D. A. Carson and J. I. Packer.
  • A review of Follis’ book by Douglas Groothuis just published in Jan. 2007 in the Denver Journal
  • A brief bio of Francis Schaefer

Free PDF Book by John Owen

January 23, 2007 by Andy Naselli

Good news: John Owen’s Overcoming Sin and Temptation (ed. Kelly M. Kapic and Justin Taylor; with a foreword by John Piper; Wheaton: Crossway, 2006) is now available for free as a PDF here. (HT: JT.)

Bad news (for me): I just bought this book last week from amazon.com, and it’s too late to cancel the order. Oh well. At least in this case, the good news far outweighs the bad news!

Radio Theatre: Bonhoeffer

January 20, 2007 by Andy Naselli

Last weekend Jenni and I listened to Bonhoeffer: The Cost of Freedom, another first-class presentation by Focus on the Family Radio Theatre. (Cf. my previous post on The Life of Jesus.) It is moving. It impressed me with how little the contemporary American church knows of persecution and how dispassionate we can be for the gospel. An edifying listen.

Disclaimer: I’m not expert in Dietrich Bonhoeffer‘s theology. I’ve read a lot about him and only a little by him (i.e., his Letters and Papers from Prison, rev. ed., ed. Eberhard Bethge; trans. Reginald Fuller; rev. Frank Clarke and others [New York: Macmillan, 1967]). Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-45) is notoriously difficult to categorize theologically because his writings are sporadic rather than systematic. The work that I read is by far his most influential one (the New Dictionary of Theology calls it “one of the most influential theological documents of the century”), and it has inspired those holding diverse theological viewpoints spanning from conservative evangelicals to “death of God” theologians. The reason so many theologies could claim Bonhoeffer as inspirational is that his letters contain vague, serviceable terminology such as “worldly holiness” (p. 201), “world come of age” (the most frequent such phrase in his letters), and “religionless Christianity” (pp. 152-57, 172, 178-79). Although I do not appreciate Bonhoeffer’s seed theology (i.e., as I now understand it with the relatively little exposure I’ve had), I highly respect him for his courageous martyrdom and events that led to it.

D. A. Carson MP3s

December 17, 2006 by Andy Naselli

Update: The Gospel Coalition is now hosting a comprehensive collection of DAC MP3s. Consequently, I won’t be updating this list.

* * * * * * *

I have profited immensely from MP3s by Dr. D. A. Carson. His manner of speaking is just as articulate, thoughtful, and engaging as his published books and articles. He exalts Christ by exegeting His words, tracing themes through the Bible’s salvation-historical story-line, systematically addressing hot topics, and engaging and confronting bad theology as well as the culture. What follows is a list of some of his MP3s arranged somewhat topically.
