D. A. Carson MP3s Now Hosted by TGC

January 14, 2009 by Andy Naselli

My blog’s most popular post has been “D. A. Carson MP3s” (December 17, 2006). It’s a compilation of links to about 200 Carson MP3s. I updated it diligently through the beginning of 2008, but I stopped because I knew that it would soon become obsolete.

For about the last six months, I’ve attempted to compile a comprehensive collection of Carson MP3s so that TGC could host them. So far I’ve uploaded 443 MP3s (and some MV4s, too), and the plan is to add more as they become available. You can browse most of them in the “sermons” category.

Here are some advantages to the Carson MP3s now hosted by TGC:

  1. Price: They are all free. Previously ChristWay Media sold dozens of Carson MP3s for $1.50 each. Now those same MP3s are available at no charge from TGC site.
  2. Number: Never before have so many Carson MP3s been available online. Many of them have not been available online previously. For example, I obtained CDs from Carson with his talks on them from conferences all over the world (including several in French).
  3. Convenience: Never before have so many Carson MP3s been available online at a single website, and no user name or password is needed to download them.
  4. Continuity: The MP3s are hosted by the same website. Maintaining my previous list of Carson MP3s was challenging because links would constantly change when websites were updated.
  5. Labels: The MP3s are uniformly tagged with as much information as I could find (e.g., title, Scripture text, series, topic, date), and the format of the names of the MP3s themselves are also consistent (e.g., “20020619_Eph_2.11-22_community_and_the_cross.mp3”).

I’d highly recommend that you redeem the time and systematically and thoughtfully listen to these MP3s. I have profited immensely from them. Carson’s manner of speaking is just as articulate, thoughtful, and engaging as his publications. He exalts Christ by exegeting his words, tracing themes through the Bible’s salvation-historical storyline, addressing hot topics with clarity and nuance, and engaging and confronting bad theology as well as the culture.

This is really fantastic Andy. Thank you for all your labor in tracking these sermons and lectures. I have listened to Dr. Carson through your previous post, but now I will bookmark and use this compilation of sermons.

This is a great resource. Thank you for making it available. I do have a suggestion.

    1) Have the files available via a RSS/Podcast feed. I would prefer to download everything without a lot of navigation.

    2) It does not seem that the videos are in a format that can be downloaded for IPOD, etc. and this would be helpful.

    Andy,

Those are really good news!!! Like all of you, I love listening Dr Carson (and it’s my way to learn english… maybe french too?)

I thank God for Don’s faithfulness and love for the church, and now for his generosity sharing those sermons, and also for The Gospel Coalition… lots of things to be thankful to our God!

We love Don in Barcelona too ;-)))

    Hi there

Nice work. Given that there are so many and its hard to know where to start, and the fact that I’ve listened to a lot of the free stuff – are there any particular highlights from the ones that previously had a price tag?

Thanks again for a massive amount of work

    Mark

Good news, Andy, and would that more releasers of MP3’s would use the *very* welome approach to labelling that you have taken. I generally rename MP3s I grab using that same system (or one much like it!).

    Dear Mark,

Re your question (“are there any particular highlights from the ones that previously had a price tag?”), I think they’re all worth listening to, though which ones you would find most interesting will depend on a variety of factors that I can’t really predict. Perhaps start with the ones on Bible interpretation, then the expositions of Hebrews, Philippians, and 1 John?

  10. Jon says

    January 15, 2009 at 12:59 pm

Which ones are in French? I’d love to send some on to my French speaking Christian friends.

Jon, you can spot these by looking at the titles as you scroll through the pages of sermons available. (We may be able at some point to make the “language” category visible so that you can simply click “French” to make them all show.)

Andy – thank you very much for this fantastic resource. I’m from Australia and ‘The Don’ is a frequent visitor.

Some of the files in the second half of the January 2000 section are still linked to the Crossway Media site and require payment.

    Once more thank you!

There’s a problem when you search resources in the Scripture Index – The Hebrews and James links in menu are linked to Philemon

    Andy,

Thanks so much for making all of these sermons and lectures available. I’ve been a steady consumer at ChristWayMedia, but it just seemed that many didn’t know about the website, or didn’t want to pay the small amount for the audio.

One suggestion, you already have two sorting tabs, one “By Date” and one “By Topic.” Could you add two more, one “By Passage” and one “By Series”?

“By Passage” would be helpful when someone is looking for some help on a particular passage they are studying but don’t know what topic it would be listed under. And “By Series” would be very helpful so that different series under one topic could be separated. As it is, it is hard to figure out exactly which messages were preached at the same time. It would also be appreciated if you could number the messages within a particular series so we would know in which order they were preached. The date isn’t always a reliable guide if more than one message was preached on the same day, especially if it isn’t sequential exposition through a Bible passage.

Also, 2 questions, I know on ChristWayMedia, there was a mutiple lecture series on The Openness of God, but I can’t find it on the new site. I also remember a series titled something like, “The Holy Spirit in Acts,” but I can’t that one either, at least not in the tabs I checked.

In sorting “By Topic” what is the difference between “Preaching,” “Preaching and Teaching” and “Preaching & Teaching”? Also, what is the difference between “Predestination” and “Predestination and Election”?

Thanks so much for your diligence in providing these for believers everywhere!

    Hi Andy,

Thanks so much for this. I had my eye on a series (Hebrews I think it was) from the Bunyan Conference quite some time ago on the Christway site by Carson. The site was decomissioned before I could buy and download the talks. Couldn’t see them on the GC site. Are they still around and availible?

    Thanks again for this ministry.

You mention that you have mp3s in French. Is there an easy way to find them? BTW, Carson’s French is excellent.
