Tips for Safer Surfing with a Firefox Browser

October 6, 2008 by Andy Naselli

Phil Gons shares that Firefox has some add-ons that can serve as tools for safer surfing online:

  1. Adblock Plus automatically blocks most ads on most sites. You can also allow them on some sites.
  2. Nuke Anything Enhanced allows you to right-click on any image to remove it instantly.
  3. Flashblock works similarly for Flash.
  4. Web Developer instantly removes all images on a page when you type Alt-t-w-i-n.

    Andy,

Thank you for the tips. I love Firefox for its addons. Technology is great when it serves me–not so great when I serve it. As I fight the sin of passivity in my own life, here are two addons I use and have been served by.

LeechBlock is a simple productivity tool designed to block sites you tend to waste time on or linger too long at. All you need to do is specify which sites to block and when to block them. In fact, it cut me out while leaving this comment (for example, I use LeechBlock to allow myself only 10 minutes on all but a few sites every four hours). Leechblock is very customizable and it has served me well.

TimeTracker is much simpler–it places a timer in the bottom corner of Firefox telling you how much time you have been online that day. I’ve found this to be sobering and helpful.

A friend of mine sent me this comment: “If you use ‘customize Google’ as an add-on for Firefox you can set the options for any Google search to remove explicit ads and results. There are many other enhancements including removal of ads, etc.”
