Brothers, We Are Not Professionals

August 22, 2013 by Andy Naselli

brosEarlier this summer I read this book for the first time:

John Piper. Brothers, We Are Not Professionals: A Plea to Pastors for Radical Ministry. 2nd ed. Nashville: Broadman & Holman, 2013. 307 pp.

Wow.

Here are the contents (I highlighted the chapters that are new to the second edition): [Read more…] about Brothers, We Are Not Professionals

Free MP3s: 6 Hours by Miles Van Pelt on Old Testament Biblical Theology

August 20, 2013 by Andy Naselli

This is rich. I’ve heard several people recommend them recently, and now I know why.

You can download the audio as stand-alone MP3s or via a new app, and you can read the transcripts.

The corresponding NT lectures are by Craig Blomberg (about 4 hours, 40 min.) and Tom Schreiner (about 4 hours, 15 min.). It’s good stuff, but in these recordings Miles Van Pelt is more engaging.

MacArthur: “It’s very easy to be hard to understand”

August 15, 2013 by Andy Naselli

From an interview of John MacArthur on “expository leadership” (watch from 11:45 to 12:35):

The money quote:

It’s very easy to be hard to understand. It only requires that you not know what you’re talking about. And if you don’t know what you’re talking about, nobody else will either.

It’s very hard to be crystal-clear because in order to be crystal-clear you have to have mastered the text. [Read more…] about MacArthur: “It’s very easy to be hard to understand”

Evangelical Unity and Denominational Diversity

August 13, 2013 by Andy Naselli

chuteChute, Anthony L., Christopher W. Morgan, and Robert A. Peterson, eds. Why We Belong: Evangelical Unity and Denominational Diversity. Wheaton: Crossway, 2013. 251 pp.

My endorsement:

This book promotes a healthy Christian unity by showing how and why God’s family is much larger than any one denomination. [Read more…] about Evangelical Unity and Denominational Diversity

The Best Book on Sexual Purity

August 6, 2013 by Andy Naselli

freeThis is by far the single most helpful book on sexual purity for men that I’m aware of:

Heath Lambert. Finally Free: Fighting for Purity with the Power of Grace. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2013. 176 pp. 23-page sample PDF.

It’s clear, direct, practical, and grace-giving.

I highly recommended this for men who are fighting lust or wallowing in it. I pray that God will use this book to help thousands of men be “finally free.”

The Poverty of Nations: A Sustainable Solution

August 1, 2013 by Andy Naselli

grudemThis book is scheduled to release at the end of the month:

Wayne Grudem and Barry Asmus. The Poverty of Nations: A Sustainable Solution. Wheaton: Crossway, 2013. 398 pp.

I’ve skimmed it, and it’s what I expected from Grudem: well-organized, clear, comprehensive, and compelling. It’s helpful to start by carefully reading the detailed version of the contents (pp. 11–18). [Read more…] about The Poverty of Nations: A Sustainable Solution

Lloyd-Jones: “I prefer to call myself a conservative evangelical”

July 30, 2013 by Andy Naselli

From a rare interview with Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (see 5:45–7:18):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Z-MBHKREsS8&start=345s

Question [at 6:07 in the video]: Are you a fundamentalist?

Lloyd-Jones’s answer: Like many others I don’t like the term. I prefer to call myself a conservative evangelical. [Read more…] about Lloyd-Jones: “I prefer to call myself a conservative evangelical”
