How I Listen to Online Videos of Interviews, Lectures, and Sermons as Podcasts

October 22, 2018 by Andy Naselli

Problem: I don’t have time to watch a lot of online videos of interviews, lectures, and sermons. I would happily listen to the audio from certain videos on my iPhone if there was an efficient way to do that.

Solution: There is finally an efficient way to do that (at least with a MacBook and iPhone—I’m not sure about other devices). I love this podcast system.

How to Set Up the Podcast System

1. Subscribe to the Castro podcast app on your iPhone ($8.99 per year).

You can use the Castro app as your only podcast app, but I prefer the Overcast app for podcasts I subscribe to. I use the Castro app solely for listening to online media I’ve downloaded as MP3s.

The Riot and the Dance: A New Nature Documentary That Honors the Creator

February 20, 2018 by Andy Naselli

My family loves watching high-quality nature documentaries like BBC’s Planet Earth. I call them theological documentaries—even when the people who make them don‘t share my biblical convictions that God is the sovereign creator and that humans have a God-given responsibility to rule over the nature that these films showcase.

What would it be like to watch a high-quality nature documentary that honors the Creator? Watch The Riot and the Dance—Part 1: Earth.

After I read Doug Wilson’s take on this new film, I wanted to see it.

My kids enjoyed it so much that they begged Jenni and me to watch it twice in one weekend.

Here’s an 80-second trailer for the 80-minute film:

The film features Doug Wilson’s brother Gordon Wilson (B.S., education/biology, University of Idaho; M.S., entomology, University of Idaho; Ph.D., environmental science and public policy, George Mason University). He is author of The Riot and the Dance: Foundational Biology.

Gordon Wilson mixes a creative sense of humor with fascinating and unlikely close-ups of animals. Unlike most nature documentaries, this one shows a human being interacting with nature. It does not preach the sermon that secular documentaries often do: Untouched nature is the ideal, and animals are as valuable as (or even more valuable than) humans.

(God commands humans to subdue the earth—to rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground [Genesis 1:28]. And Jesus asserts that humans are more valuable than animals [see Matthew 6:26; 10:31; 12:12].)

The film is also funny and engaging. My daughters were belly laughing about seals and mesmerized by snakes.

Wilson narrates with wit and wisdom. Our nine-year-old daughter was quoting him on a family walk the day after we first watched the film: “To be bored in this world is to be boring in this world.”

We’re looking forward to Part 2: Water (coming in 2019).

More info about the film here.

My Seminary Is Now Offering an M.A. in Exegesis and Theology for Women and Men

February 14, 2018 by Andy Naselli

My seminary has focused exclusively on training pastors with our four-year M.Div. program.

Now Bethlehem College & Seminary is adding a two-year M.A. program for both women and men.

My colleague Rick Shenk recently announced,

Over the past several years, we have received numerous inquiries from friends who love the vision, theology, and faculty of Bethlehem College & Seminary but could not enroll in our flagship M.Div. program that focuses on training men for vocational eldership. Associate pastors and non-staff elders, women’s ministry leaders, missionaries, and others who desire formal theological education have asked, “What about us?”

I am so excited that we are now offering an M.A. in Exegesis and Theology for women and men! I love this!

This is another way that Bethlehem College & Seminary is spreading a passion for the supremacy of God for the joy of all peoples through Jesus Christ.

My Favorite Two Sentences in the Bible (Romans 11:36) on Canvas

March 13, 2017 by Andy Naselli

My favorite two sentences in the Bible are Romans 11:36:

For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

Here’s how I trace the argument in Romans 11:33–36:

(I wrote a PhD dissertation on that passage, focusing on the previous two sentences—published in 2012.)

I asked Joe Tyrpak, one of my accountability partners, if he would design Romans 11:36 for canvas so that I could display it over the fireplace in our home and over my desk in my school office. Most people think of Joe as a faithful pastor and gifted preacher (and he is), but he also has an undergraduate degree in graphic design. Here’s what he designed for me:

How to Make My Favorite (Healthy) Snack: Popcorn

November 1, 2016 by Andy Naselli

File this under under “the things of earth.”

I don’t do much cooking, but I know how to make delicious popcorn. I’ve done this hundreds of times.

This popcorn is far healthier and tastier than microwave popcorn.

Tools and Ingredients

  1. Stove
  2. Popcorn popper (We use this one. It’s not heavy-duty—we’re on our third one—but it does the job.)
  3. Olive oil (We use this.)
  4. Popcorn kernels (We’ve used this for our last several rounds.)
  5. 1/2 measuring cup
  6. Popcorn salt (We use this.)
  7. Big bowl
