My Favorite Two Sentences in the Bible (Romans 11:36) on Canvas

March 13, 2017 by Andy Naselli

My favorite two sentences in the Bible are Romans 11:36:

For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

Here’s how I trace the argument in Romans 11:33–36:

(I wrote a PhD dissertation on that passage, focusing on the previous two sentences—published in 2012.)

I asked Joe Tyrpak, one of my accountability partners, if he would design Romans 11:36 for canvas so that I could display it over the fireplace in our home and over my desk in my school office. Most people think of Joe as a faithful pastor and gifted preacher (and he is), but he also has an undergraduate degree in graphic design. Here’s what he designed for me:

The Life of David Brainerd: A Documentary by Joe Tyrpak

July 29, 2015 by Andy Naselli

combo

Joe Tyrpak recently produced an edifying 57-minute documentary called The Life of David Brainerd. It introduces the most influential book on missions in modern history—the most popular book authored by American’s greatest theologian, Jonathan Edwards. Joe also wrote a corresponding 44-page devotional. (If you order the DVD and devotional together, you save $2.)

Joe and I are close friends and accountability partners. He pastors Tri-County Bible Church in Madison, Ohio, and he is currently finishing his Doctor of Ministry in Applied Theology at Southern Seminary. His DMin thesis is on David Brainerd.

Joe’s a great guy, and his documentary is well done. My family enjoyed watching it together.

Joe did his homework. The people he interviewed include Ken Minkema and Doug Sweeney, both scholars on Jonathan Edwards. (He briefly interviewed me as well regarding spirituality, but the Edwards scholars are particularly helpful.)

Historian Nathan Finn reviewed the documentary very positively for the Jonathan Edwards Center at TEDS.

Update on 8/18/2015: Here’s a trailer (3:19 min.):

Covenant Eyes

June 18, 2012 by Andy Naselli

This is a guest post by Joe Tyrpak, one of my accountability partners.

I use Covenant Eyes on my desktop and laptop computers, and I agree with Joe that it is outstanding accountability software.

Fighting Lust, Inviting Accountability, Using Covenant Eyes

Fighting lust is an all-out war. Even though it’s not the only front on which the battle is fought, one crucial strategy for fighting lust is accountability. And even though the Internet is not the only place where a guy struggles with temptation, Internet accountability is one of the most crucial aspects of accountability today. Gospel Meditations for Men

June 2, 2011 by Andy Naselli

Last year my wife blogged about Gospel Meditations for Women by Chris Anderson and Joe Tyrpak.

Chris and Joe wrote a corresponding booklet for men that’s available starting today (in time for Father’s Day if you order soon).

Applying the gospel never gets old because we always need it. These fresh meditations serve men well.

Gospel Meditations for Women

April 27, 2010 by Andy Naselli

By Jenni Naselli

Andy recently gave me Gospel Meditations for Women by Chris Anderson and Joe Tyrpak. I’m enjoying and being edified by it. It’s not fluffy.

The thirty-two-page booklet is broken into thirty-one days of specific Scripture-readings with a corresponding gospel-meditation. It applies the gospel, for example, to relationships (“The Gospel Crushes Relational Conflict”) and trials (“Jesus’ Crucifixion and My Trials”). The topics range from theology (e.g., sanctification, inspiration, Christ’s substitutionary death) to specific applications for women (e.g., modesty, singleness, romance, motherhood, older women mentors). I especially appreciate the little nuggets of application at the bottom of each page, which sum up the meditations. This morning I read, “Let the Gospel affect your relationships.” Very good. I need this.

Help for Fighting Lust: A Meditation Plan

May 4, 2009 by Andy Naselli

Joe Tyrpak, a gifted, godly young pastor and one of my close friends (e.g., he’s one of my accountability parters), recently posted a five-part series on fighting lust.

  1. Call to mind the deceptions of sinful sensuality.
  2. Call to mind the destructions of sinful sensuality.
  3. Call to mind the delights of God-ordained sensuality.
  4. Call to mind the eyes of God.
  5. Call to mind my union with Christ.

Joe also recently preached a sermon on 1 Cor 6:12–20 entitled “Gospel-Controlled Sexuality.”
