Two Clarifications about Keswick Theology

July 16, 2010 by Andy Naselli

I clarify two issues in a guest post today for Kevin DeYoung’s blog:

  1. What about Keswick today?
  2. Is Frances Havergal really connected to Keswick theology?

Update on 8/23/2017: My latest book attempts to survey and analyze “let go and let God” theology:

Pietistic Goofiness

June 30, 2010 by Andy Naselli

That’s what J. I. Packer calls Keswick theology. And for good reason, too. It nearly destroyed him.

For details, see my guest post today for Kevin DeYoung’s blog: “Pietistic Goofiness: How Keswick Theology Nearly Destroyed J.I. Packer.”

Update on 8/23/2017: My latest book attempts to survey and analyze “let go and let God” theology more accessibly:

Interview on Keswick Theology

June 3, 2010 by Andy Naselli

I recently answered these questions from Kevin DeYoung after he read my book on Keswick theology:

  1. Give us a brief history of the Keswick movement.
  2. Who were some of the significant people involved with Keswick, both those who influenced it and those influenced by it?
  3. I really like how you explain Keswick theology by going through a typical Keswick conference. Would you explain the conference and theology for us?
  4. What are the chief problems with the Keswick view of sanctification?
  5. Where do we still see Keswick’s influence today? Is their’s a common error that resurfaces often in the church? If so, what makes its so attractive?
  6. What projects are you currently working on, either for yourself or for Dr. Carson?

How to “sustain meaningful discourse without resorting to name-calling or cowardly equivocation”

May 21, 2009 by Andy Naselli

Kevin DeYoung‘s “Defining Discourse Down” in First Things is superb. I benefitted from it even more after re-reading it this evening.

This part hurts the most:

We are all proud. Because I’m proud I get hurt when people disagree with me strongly. Because I’m proud I feel the need to give thirteen qualifications before I make an argument, not usually because I’m a swell guy but because I love for people to love me and loathe for them to dislike or misunderstand me. Because I’m proud I hedge my criticisms so that I won’t have to publicly repent and recant when I go too far and get something wrong. Because we’re proud, protectors of self more than lovers of truth, we often don’t discuss things with candor or with verve.

Read the whole thing—esp. the last four paragraphs.

“Please God, don’t let the New Calvinism ever, ever be about the New Calvinism”

May 13, 2009 by Andy Naselli

A good word from Kevin DeYoung:

Here are the two most important things you need to know about the rise of the New Calvinism: it’s not new and it’s not about Calvin. . . . “Please God, don’t let the young, restless, and reformed movement be another historically ignorant, self-absorbed, cooler-than-thou fad.”

Read the whole thing.

“I can’t help but look back on all the entertainment I’ve consumed and think ‘Has all of this been anywhere close to a net positive in my spiritual maturity?'”

April 15, 2009 by Andy Naselli

Kevin DeYoung, senior pastor of University Reformed Church in East Lansing, Michigan, reflects on “worldliness in entertainment” as a “high place.”
