The Gospels: Photo Companion to the Bible

Five years ago I recommended Todd Bolen’s Pictorial Library of Bible Lands.

This month Todd Bolen and his team have added to that collection with The Gospels: Photo Companion to the Bible. (There is a sale through August 21.)

Here’s a 5-minute video introduction:

For over a decade Todd Bolen lived in Israel while he taught the Israel Bible Extension for The Master’s College. Many evangelical books feature his photos of Israel. Todd is now professor of biblical studies at The Master’s College in Southern California. He wrote the notes on 2 Kings in the study Bible I coedited, and he wrote the chapter on 1–2 Chronicles in the OT survey my colleague Jason DeRouchie edited. His pictures fill DeRouchie’s OT survey—nearly 300 of them.

The second edition of this book recently released:

Michael P. V. Barrett. Complete in Him: A Guide to Understanding and Enjoying the Gospel. 2nd ed. Grand Rapids: Reformation Heritage, 2017.

My endorsement:

Barrett correlates what the whole Bible teaches about the gospel in a way that is organized, clear, faithful, and edifying. As he says over and over, right thinking about the gospel produces right living in the gospel. The better you understand the gospel, the better you can enjoy it.

The Vanishing American Adult

I enjoyed reading this new book last week by my favorite United States Senator:

Ben Sasse. The Vanishing American Adult: Our Coming-of-Age Crisis—and How to Rebuild a Culture of Self-Reliance. New York: St. Martin’s, 2017.

It’s unusual for a U.S. Senator to write a book like this. It’s not politically partisan. It’s more like a philosophical and practical book on parenting.

Sasse convincingly argues that kids should read great books and work hard and that parents should strategically introduce their children to different world cultures so that they better understand their own.
