How to Grade Papers

Update on 5/24/2016: For the last few years I’ve been using this grading rubric for research papers, and I think it works well. It’s based on a 10-point scale (90–100 = A, 80–89 = B, etc.).

Grading papers is obviously more subjective than grading multiple choice or true/false, and Boda’s criteria help make the process a little more objective.

True Beauty

trueSix years ago my wife recommended three books by Carolyn Mahaney and her daughters.

At the end of this month another one releases:

Carolyn Mahaney and Nicole Whitacre. True Beauty. Wheaton: Crossway, 2014. 125 pp. 22-page PDF sample.

Church Essentials (DVD) with Mark Dever

essentialsI love Mark Dever’s resources on the church, so I’m not sure why I don’t recall hearing about Church Essentials, which Lifeway published in 2012.

The Leader Kit includes two DVDs, which feature six thoughtful interviews with Mark Dever. Mark is incredibly gifted at speaking off-the-cuff clearly, directly, wisely, and winsomely.

Timothy Keller. Walking with God through Pain and Suffering. New York: Dutton, 2013. 12-page PDF sample.

It’s probably the best overall book on suffering because it shrewdly addresses the issue from three angles:

  1. cultural
  2. biblical-theological
  3. practical

Son of God: The New Movie

Here’s a trailer for Son of God, a movie that opens in theaters starting Friday, February 28:

Here are 3 reasons I don’t enthusiastically recommend that.

Matt Perman has been working on this book for a long time, and it’s scheduled to release on March 4:

I’ve read a bit on productivity (not nearly as much as Matt), and this book is overall the most helpful one I’m aware of because it combines the best of the productivity literature (like David Allen’s Getting Things Done) with sound theology.

I’ve been listening to MP3s from the recent Cross Conference, and I was so edified by David Platt’s sermon “Mobilizing God’s Army for the Great Commission.” In the middle of his sermon, Platt quotes Romans 1–8 from memory. It’s powerful.

I heard it for the first time early last Thursday morning, and I was so moved by it that I listened to it again with my colleague Jason DeRouchie when we drove to the BCS campus together. And then I watched it in my office before class. So edifying.
