Discipline yourself that you don't use it to talk to anyone who is within the same building as you at the time. I find in my college residence lots of people get lazy and facebook message people instead of walking 3 doors down the passageway to say whatever they needed to. I imagine there would be the same temptation in an office. While it seems easier in the short term to send people a message some of the best interaction happens when you surprise people by getting up to talk to them face to face rather than just the reply message they've come to expect.

Also, minimize your use of facebook applications. Most of them are seriously pointless time wasters and can also pose a privacy risk as the thirdparty that created the application is sometimes able to get at your information through them.

I use FB for two main purposes:

1. Intentionally preaching the gospel to my saved and unsaved friends, family, and students. Instead of using the status box to feed my narcissistic desire for aggrandizement (so easy to do), I try to promote the glory of the cross. FB has given me a platform into the lives of my family and friends who are antagonistic toward the gospel. God has provided several witnessing opportunities through FB.

2. Keep up with friends and family.

1) For keeping in touch with friends.
2) For letting others know what's going on in your life.
3) For recreation or games.
4) For causes, study groups, dialogues, etc., important to you.
5) For prayer, through your list of friends as it grows.

I was and perhaps even am a Facebook skeptic. But it is a great tool for organizing / communicating with a small group. (Meetings, activities, sign-ups, etc)

Example:<a href="http://groups.to/4bya" rel="nofollow">4BYA Facebook page</a>

Also: It is not a bad way to share photos with family and friends.

Suggestions:
* Check settings and make sure permissions are set so that only the ones you want to see your info can see it.
* Don't add applications unless you know what they do.
* Be prepared for lame ads on the frame borders. Might be a girl in a swim suit for example.

Ha. Saw Josh added you as a friend/vice versa. <a href="http://karagraphy.com/2008/12/07/dont-worry-you-are-still-my-friends-most-of-you-even-if-facebook-wont-be/" rel="nofollow">Too bad I'm no longer on there</a>.

A lot of the same things apply that would for blogdom, depending upon what kind of interaction you want to encourage. Eschew navel-gazing and posing. Don't get bent out of shape over adiaphora. Don't join petition groups against ads showing up in the sidebar (which can be blocked by browser plug-ins anyway). Don't let it consume your time. Don't blast a book you've never read. Don't blast people, either.

Automatically add the feed of your blog to your "notes." Many of the same things you have already done with a blog can more or less apply to your FB activity- family pictures, for example can be displayed (and only accessed by those you approve).

You can also get some ideas of what (some) people you care about find important- and better know how to pray for them (and exhort them) in the process.

First rule: Don't feel obligated to add "friends" just because they ask.

Second rule: Patrol postings regularly in case someone writes or posts something inappropriate. This has much to do with the first rule!

Third rule: Use it for communication, not a platform to express yourself or reveal more about you than most people care to know.

Just beginning thoughts.
